The Gandhara region has been an intellectual and spiritual center of Buddhism for centuries, renowned for its unique Gandhara art, culture, and sculptures that influenced civilizations across Asia.
The archaeological remains of Gandhara are well-preserved in Taxila, Peshawar, Charsadda, Takht Bahi, and Swat, along with rock carvings on the ancient Silk Road (Karakoram Highway – KKH). Taxila, the heart of Gandhara, lies in the Haro River Valley near Islamabad and dates back over 3,000 years. This ancient city attracted the attention of Alexander the Great in 327 B.C. when it was part of the Achaemenian Empire. It later flourished under the Mauryan dynasty, reaching its peak under Emperor Ashoka, followed by the Indo-Greeks and the Kushan dynasty, which brought Gandhara’s most creative era around 50 A.D.
For nearly 2,000 years, Taxila, Peshawar, and Swat remained thriving centers of Buddhist learning, philosophy, trade, and art, attracting travelers and pilgrims from China, Central Asia, and Greece. However, by the 5th century A.D., the White Huns marked the decline of this once-flourishing civilization.
