Chitral – A Land of Majestic Mountains

Tucked into the northwestern corner of Pakistan, Chitral is a remote and isolated region surrounded by towering mountains. It is bordered by:

  • West: Kafiristan range (separating it from Afghanistan)
  • North: Hindukush range
  • East & South: Shandur and Hindu Raj ranges

Chitral is home to narrow forested valleys, ancient cultures, and hospitable locals, offering a unique and charming experience. Snowcapped peaks dominate the landscape, including:

  • Tirich Mir (7,706m) – the highest peak in the Hindukush
  • Noshaq (7,492m)
  • Istor-o-Nal (7,403m)
  • Saraghrar (7,349m)

Glaciers cascade down these mountains, feeding the Chitral River. The region transitions from densely forested southern valleys to arid northern highlands, making it a trekker’s paradise.

Kalash Valley – The Last Pagan Tribe of the Hindukush

The Kalash people are the last remaining non-Muslim community in the Hindukush. About 3,000 Kalash still follow their ancient pre-Islamic traditions.

Kalash Valleys:

The Kalash reside in three picturesque valleys, each with its own cultural significance:

  1. Birir (Biriyoo in Kalashamun)
  2. Rumbur (Roghmo in Kalashamun)
  3. Bumboret (Bomboret in Kalashamun)

These valleys lie south and west of Chitral town, along the Chitral River.

Culture & Traditions of Kalash People

  • Subsistence Farming & Goat Herding: The Kalash cultivate irrigated (but non-terraced) fields and rear goats in highland pastures.
  • Unique Architecture: Villages are built at the base of rocky hills, with flat-roofed, tightly clustered houses.
  • Gandao Wooden Figures: Carved wooden statues of Kalash ancestors (often depicted on horseback) serve as a tribute to the past. Unfortunately, many have been removed by collectors and museums.
