Shimshal Yak Safari – A Journey into Pakistan’s Untamed Highlands
Explore the Remotest Part of Hunza Valley
Shimshal, the most remote village in Upper Hunza, lies near the China-Pakistan border, surrounded by the Khunjerab and Hunza Rivers. Stretching from the Hunza River to Baltistan, this valley remained isolated for centuries until the completion of a 53 km jeep road from Passu in 2003. Before this, reaching Shimshal required a three-day trek, making it one of the most secluded regions of Pakistan.
The Culture & Traditions of Shimshal
The Wakhi people of Shimshal have preserved their rich traditions and language due to the valley’s remoteness. Their lifestyle revolves around seasonal festivals and livestock grazing in high-altitude Pamir pastures.
The Annual Yak Migration – “KUCH” Festival
Every May, Shimshali herders migrate with their yak, sheep, and goats to the Pamir pastures for five months (May–October), collecting butter, cheese, and wool for the harsh winters. In October, they descend back to the village in a spectacular procession, a tradition called “KUCH” (travel). The return is marked by:
- Yak caravans carrying supplies and children
- Traditional dress and festive gatherings
- Goat sacrifice at Shimshal River bridge
- A grand welcome ceremony in the village
